Fundamentals of Product Design

Product design is not an uncommon term for entrepreneurs. With the growth of technology each day, many subtypes of product design are emerging. With all these variations, many product designing companies are also emerging that help businesses mold their imaginations into reality. One such example of a core product designing company is Future Factory.

So, let’s understand this term and how it works.

What is a Product?

Before moving to Product design, a crisp understanding of the term ‘Product’ is important. Until recently, the term was used only for describing a material or commodity ready to be sold. But its definition has changed with time. Nowadays, the product can refer to anything from tangible to digital products like websites and applications.

However, irrespective of the type of product, the key elements needed to build a product are constant- innovation and new product design. This may further include digital design, service design, prototyping, and model making.

Whether creating cutting-edge audio equipment or intricate electromechanical design, product design encompasses a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, interior design, lifestyle, interior design, automobile, etc.

What is a Product Design?

In simple words, it means creating a viable product that satisfies the consumer’s demands by identifying the user’s problems and devising innovative solutions to their problems.

The onset of the 21st century has brought many changes in our lifestyle, the only constant changes since then. Technology is solely responsible for this transformation. Human resources have become so busy that remote controls have replaced manual switches on walls to some extent.

Product design is a wide notion generally referring to the efficient and effective invention and development of ideas through a mind map and then a visual design process that eventually manufactures a new product. So, one can say that Product design is a crucial part of new product development.

According to many business experts like Geetika Kambli and Jashish Kambli, that product design also plays an important role in identifying market opportunities, that defines the customer’s needs, problems, and solutions to the problem, and finally executing the solution to the customers.

While keeping these factors in mind, the designer needs to check the visual part of the product and its interaction with the consumer. This can be attained in several steps, as discussed in the next section.

Why is Product Design Important?

Product design is important for a number of reasons. First, it can help to improve the function of a product. Second, it can improve the aesthetics of a product. Third, it can help to make a product more user-friendly. And fourth, it can help to improve the manufacturing process of a product.

Functionality: By improving the design of a product, you can often improve its function. This might mean making it easier to use, or making it more effective at performing its intended task. For example, well-designed kitchen knives are easier to use and more effective at cutting than poorly designed ones.

Aesthetics: The way a product looks is also important. Aesthetically pleasing products are more likely to be successful than those that are not. This is because people tend to prefer products that look good. In addition, products with good aesthetics are often seen as being higher quality than those with poor aesthetics.

User-friendliness: User-friendliness is another important factor in product design. Products that are easy to use tend to be more successful than those that are not. This is because people prefer products that they can easily use and understand. In addition, products that are easy to use are often seen as being higher quality than those that are not.

Manufacturing: Finally, manufacturing plays an important role in product design. The better the design of a product, the easier and cheaper it will be to manufacture. This is because well

Five Phases of Designing a Product

If you think product design means only designing a product digitally or manually, you have the wrong perception. It includes several steps before the actual design. Following are the five steps that are followed while designing a product.

#1 Research

User research on the problems that are to be solved by the product must be done. These can include surveys, case studies, and technical studies. Some designers also prefer to speak personally to their target audience.

#2 Define

Creating a point of view based on the user’s needs and insight is crucial. This will help in picturing the product effectively.

#3 Brainstorm

Now that you know the problem, you need to think of a solution. It is important to understand that only one solution is not sufficient to move to the product design part. Some design thinking and brainstorming sessions by the design team are needed before product development.

#4 Prototype

After narrowing down the options, the next step is building the prototype. This will test your hypothesis. Prototypes can help the designer understand if they are on the right track. In fact, it sometimes also leads to bringing innovative ideas into the designer’s mind, which otherwise would not have been possible. Since the tools for prototyping is expensive, designers prefer a digital UI and UX design.

#5 Test

Now, to test the product, it is sent to some of the users for testing. The user experience is noted before its approval. The product is launched officially if it passes the test and the company approves it.

Building great products take a lot of effort. Some companies build their own creative and design team to do the work, and some companies hire other award winning design studio like Future Factory for their product design. Whichever way they follow, it is crucial to stay up-to-date with the trends and innovation to build the best products.
