So, you’ve finally decided to check out Trinidad’s Carnival after years of hearing about how much fun celebrities have had there. Wow, that’s fantastic news! One of the most amazing things ever is going to happen to you!

Anybody who has attempted to organize a vacation to Trinidad will attest to how challenging it can be. As a result of its reliance on the oil and gas industry, Trinidad’s tourism industry is not as well established as it is in other countries, and visitors may need help finding some of the typical amenities of other tourist destinations. We’re here to guide you through the maze that is Trinidad Carnival. Let’s discuss the 2023 Trinidad Carnival!

When Is It?

Traditionally, the Monday and Tuesday preceding Trinidad’s Ash Wednesday Carnival are the most exciting (the start of the Christian season of lent). Some believe that carnival began these days because revelers wanted one final taste of sensuality before becoming “ultra holy” for Lent. I’ve heard conflicting accounts, so I can’t say for sure (for more on the history of Carnival, see here). Still, nonetheless, Carnival in Trinidad coincides with Carnival in Brazil and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. If you really care about Mardi Gras, you should prepare yourself to miss it for at least a year.

How Long Should You Spend on Vacation?

Although Carnival itself lasts only two days, the celebrations leading up to it span several months. With the first fetus (carnival parties) beginning the day after Christmas. If you want to experience some of these fetes and have time to recuperate for a day or two after the actual parade. We recommend spending at least 10 days in Trinidad. It’s a good idea to arrive in Trinidad on the Tuesday or Wednesday before carnival to start acclimating to the “fete land” and get a feel for the city before the madness begins on the weekend.

Many improvements have been made recently to draw more tourists and push the nation into the developed category. The hotels in Port of Spain are the most convenient and near to the action of the carnival.

In terms of tourism and overall activity, Carnival is the single most significant festival in Trinidad. That’s why the days leading up to the big Carnival on Monday and Tuesday are so jam-packed with cultural activities and celebrations. Most Trinis will insist they are not enjoying the Carnival but rather preparing for it.
